Nestled in the far-east side of the Flat Tops Wilderness area up a rarely used backcountry road is Gardner Park Reservoir. There are a few dispersed camping spots close to the lake, which is now being regularly stocked with trout, and a vault toilet is nearby. As the photo above shows, the area is quite beautiful.
And for an even more secluded experience, we drove up the nearby Forest Road 911 (definately requiring a high clearance 4WD vehicle) to enjoy lunch between Rams Horn Lake and Wood Lake.
For the less adventurous or those with more limited vehicle capabilities, the nearby hike to Smith Lake is easily accessible from the gravel improved Forest Road 900. Start at the trailhead near the Cold Springs Campground. The hike itself is only 0.7 miles up a very gentle climb on trail #1194. The open spot where we took this photo is probably only a hundred feet from where the trail meets the water, and then you can walk around the entire lake with some light bushwacking required on the western side.
